Scholarships After The Wave

When the students we support graduate from the R35 school, they usually go to work with their families. Recently, however, we've seen more students wishing to enter university or a training college. This is excellent as it will lead to better employment and a chance to rise above the cycle of poverty.

Tao...............

Profile of Tao:

Tao graduated from R35 in March 2009. Now she studies at Rajchaphat Phuket University. Her current tuition is 20,000 baht per term. This figure includes the cost of living in the dorms on campus. Her government loan is 8,000 baht per term, and she also has tuition support. Her family are not able to help her. Her father is from Burma and makes a living as a fisherman, and her mom is unable to work. There is one younger sister in the family. After lessons Tao has a part time job, but ATW provides another 4000 baht per month which she needs for food, transportation, and other small expenses connected with school.

The Scholarship Program:

After The Wave provides funds to students to help pay for their living expenses while they study. Typically, students require from 3,000 - 5,000 baht per month. The main costs of university/college (tuition, books, housing) are provided through Thai government loans and programs. The funds we provide help cover the other expenses (food, transportation, incidental school fees).

There are 2 types of scholarship donations:

(1) Pay a percentage of a one-year scholarship (perfect for group donations):

- 25% - 9,000 baht
- 50% - 18,000 baht
- 75% - 27,000 baht

(2) Sponsor one specific student for a year: 36,000 baht
If you sponsor one student it is potentially more meaningful as we can then send you details, updates, and also they will learn about you and write to you in thanks.

*Donations are tax deductible in Thailand and the USA (US donations must be made through our partner organization, GDN).

At the moment we really need help with paying for the scholarships. In order to qualify for the scholarship the student has to show need, but also a keen interest in learning and preparing themselves for a productive future. Many of the kids with scholarships were previously "sponsored" as
well. They have to provide us with receipts and transcripts, as well as proof of attendance. The principal of the R35 school signs-off on the scholarship. Thus, we're confident the kids we help will follow through. In the end, they are getting a chance to raise themselves up and also help out their families.
